As a curiosity, Maastricht was the battle field where the Comte d'Artagnan, the historic figure that inspired the conception of the homonymous character of Alexandre Dumas, affirmed himself. Eventually, Maastricht became part of the Netherlands in the 19th century. The city is the location where the Maastricht Treaty was signed at the end of the 20th century, constituting the basis for the foundation of the European Union.

The Jazz Maastricht Masters Festival and the Jazz Promenade, along with the TEFAF art show, are the most notable cultural events to be held in Maastricht. The Maastricht Carnival taking place in February is, on the other hand, the most popular event, but one should never forget the Preuvenemint Tasting Event, the Tango Festival and the Yuletide manifestations in December.
